Statement from US China Partnerships Board on the Passing of Former President George H.W. Bush

We were saddened to hear of the passing of our Honorary Chairman, President George H.W. Bush at the age of 94. While we will mourn his passing, we will also celebrate an extraordinary full and purposeful life having passed at a time when he was beloved by family, friends and even former political rivals.

Perhaps no President was more qualified to assume the office than President Bush based upon his experience.  He was also a true hero with an extraordinary military record virtually unmatched by any President since the American Civil War. Enlisting as the youngest Naval aviator, he was shot down on a virtually suicide bombing run to destroy Japanese artillery in a volcanic cone on Chi Chi Jima and before and after his rescue he flew a total of 58 combat missions.

US China Partnerships will always remember his extraordinary contribution to U.S.-China relations. Having served as one of our earliest envoys to the People’s Republic of China in 1974, early on President Bush would say that U.S.-Sino relations were our most important bilateral relation. He supported same both as Vice President and particularly during his Presidency.

Even in his post-presidency, President Bush continued to speak out on the importance of U.S.-China issues and regularly hosted visiting Chinese officials at his home and offices in Houston.

He will be greatly missed.
